10 things you need to know about New Phase

A new area of London is under construction, and it’s set to become one of the capital’s most desirable hubs for business, creativity and communities.

Wood Wharf TwoV3

At CCT Venues, we can’t wait for New Phase – formerly known as Wood Wharf – to spring up. It’s right on the doorstep of our newly refurbished Docklands venue, and will also be walking distance from our venues at 40 Bank Street in Canary Wharf.

If you haven’t heard the buzz about New Phase, here’s everything we know so far…

  • New Phase is scheduled for completion by 2023, and is owned by the Canary Wharf Group. The first buildings will be delivered in 2019 and 2020. With 2 million sq. ft. of commercial space, it represents a major new destination for modern businesses.
  • The site, currently under construction, will completely revitalise the area immediately to the east of Canary Wharf, on the Isle of Dogs.
  • Whereas Canary Wharf is primarily a business hub, New Phase will be a 23-acre waterside development designed to create of a feeling of community, as well as providing extremely desirable high-quality office buildings.
  • Foundations are already in place for a new footbridge, linking the reclaimed land at New Phase to Canary Wharf’s Montgomery Street, making the area easier and quicker to reach.
  • According to the latest plans, New Phase will comprise nearly 2 million square foot of office space, more than 3,300 homes and nearly half a million square foot devoted to shops and restaurants, including a weather-proof high street sheltered by a glass roof. Work is scheduled to complete on 10 Park Drive, a residential tower with 345 flats, at the end of 2019.
  • New Phase will also have a two-form entry primary school for 420 children, a leisure centre, parks, playgrounds and a GP surgery.
  • The office space being built for New Phase is specifically designed for fast-growing businesses in the technology and creative sectors. Canary Wharf Group estimates that 20,000 people will eventually be based there.
  • When it comes to design, it’s going to be impressive. A cylindrical residential tower, complete with private cinema and health club, designed by star architects Herzog & De Meuron is already well underway and more than two thirds of its apartments have already been snapped up.
  • Canary Wharf Group CEO Sir George Iacobescu says: “Canary Wharf has reinvented London's business landscape once and, with Wood Wharf [now titled New Phase], we intend to do so again for the era of fast-growth tech and creative businesses.”
  • We’ll leave the last word to Jacqueline de Rojas, President of technology trade body TechUK. She says: “London's tech sector has grown at an extraordinary rate over the past five years. The city needs infrastructure to accommodate this rapid expansion and Wood Wharf [New Phase] seems the perfect environment for start-ups and scale-ups with global ambitions.”
